One of our latest conversion projects was for a client that required a handicap accessible Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Wheelchair Van that included a passenger cabin and rear bathroom mobility accommodations. We were excited to get started, as years of experience in multiple projects has made HQ Custom Design an industry leading manufacturer of custom handicap accessible mobility vans. Our client envisioned a van that could function as a mobile office and had the practicality of a wheelchair conversion van. What resulted was a refined paratransit build that delivered in innovation, accessibility, safety and most of all style.

Made with Your Unique Needs in Mind 

As a Braun Ability dealership, HQ offers different kinds of wheelchair lifts ranging from under vehicle lift (UVL) to rear lifts that can be installed at either the sliding door entrance or at the rear of the van. This particular model features an automatic power sliding door and under vehicle lift. In addition, this build features grab poles throughout the cabin located at the front sliding door, overhead bulkhead cabinet, in between the 2 rows of seating, next to the bathroom door and within the bathroom. Grab poles provide anchor points for passengers to move around the cabin space safely, even when the van is in motion. Likewise, power lift elevation seating for the co-pilot chair and for the main captain chair allow passengers to enter and exit from their chairs more easily and with enhanced support.

In terms of seating, there are 3 20-inch frame chairs that are upholstered in Ultra leather material for added comfort and ultimate luxury.  Each chair includes a 6-way power base with adjustable armrests, leg extensions, 3-point seatbelts, and power recline. Each seat is equipped handicap elevation seat assist and 360-degree swivel for increased maneuverability. In addition, within the cockpit area, both the driver and co-pilot chairs are re-upholstered with Halo leather front seat recovers.

Built with Luxuriousness in Prime Focus

For this build, our client wanted a refined light brown and beige interior complemented by laminated wood trim valances, an overhead bulkhead cabinet and retractable table. Passengers are assured discreteness and privacy with power window shades next to every seat. Furthermore, an aviation style retractable table is included for passengers to enjoy a light meal or snack off of, or to use as a laptop stand. While the seating provides comfort during the journey, the on-board entertainment helps passengers enjoy the ride. In the cabin, there is an overhead bulkhead TV cabinet featuring a 32-inch TV display along with an Apple TV for watching movies and TV shows. A cabin Wi-Fi router allows passengers to remain connected throughout their commute and enables online functions of other devices. In addition, the cabin surround sound speaker system is made up of additional rear speakers, amplifiers and a subwoofer. These amenities can be used to watch media in true home theatre-like sound and visual quality.

Including a Handicap-Accessible Bathroom

A rear partition wall with a door separates the passenger cabin from the rear bathroom. The bathroom is made to be fully handicap accessible with an elevated assist toilet and grab poles for optimal maneuverability. Furthermore, a full wood laminate countertop and sink is included for washing hands before mid-transit snacks and after using the bathroom. A dedicated rear plumbing system accessible via the trunk ensures that everything stays clean and remains fully functional.
